The Super Collider

The Super Collider

In 1983 we began to hear the term, Super Collider. We learned this was a massive particle accelerator that most ended up calling an atom smasher. The system was first envisioned in the December 1983 National Reference Designs Study, which examined the technical and economic feasibility of a machine with the design capacity of 20 TeV per proton. After an extensive Department of Energy review during the mid-1980s, a site selection process began in 1987. The project was awarded to Texas in November 1988 and major construction began in 1991. Seventeen shafts were sunk and 23.5 km (14.6 mi) of tunnel were bored by late 1993 (from Wikipedia). In October of ’93 after spending 2 billion tax payer dollars the program was cancelled. Here’s the point, this machine was going to produce a massive collision!

Today, we are on the fast track toward a massive collision in America and the rest of our world. The collision is between two world views that simply cannot be reconciled and for which there is very little wiggle room. The root cause of the problem is a creator God versus no creator God. If there is a God, and I know there is, then what He has said and the commands He has given dictate the core principles that provide life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as delineated in our cherished Constitution. On the other hand, if there is no creator God, then man and his selfish desires become the center of our world and decisions made have no eternal consequence and we are left to the whim of a sinful society. So, we have these two irreconcilable forces on a collision course and each and every day they collide in politics, media, education, medicine, philosophy, family life and every other arena of our lives.

Each and every one of us is on one side or the other of this equation and we simply cannot afford to sit on the sidelines as passive observers. To say nothing, to do nothing is not an option as those on the other side are aggressive in the promotion of their position. As a Christ follower I am reminded of the words of the Apostle Paul as recorded in his letter to the Ephesian believers:

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Just my thoughts.
